The Rise of Tobacco
Tobacco was first used by Native Americans for religious purposes but was not a commercial product until after the Civil War. In the first half of the 1900s, tobacco, particularly cigarettes, became very popular. Television’s golden age and the new consumer society created after World War II allowed the tobacco industry to explore new marketing opportunities. Advertisements with well-known celebrities made smoking normal, fashionable, and glamorous. Children often encountered candy cigarettes and other items that resembled tobacco products. Soldiers were given free cigarettes during both World Wars, making them addicted, lifelong customers. People encountered tobacco every day, almost everywhere.
